New Year means great things, leaving past and embracing new adventures. We still have our old patterns. I’m going to tell you a story about animals and their patterns.
If you put a buzzard in a pen six or eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of his ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten or twelve feet. Without space to run, as is his habit, he will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.
The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.
A Bumblebee if dropped into an open tumbler will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.
Our patterns are also this inbred into us. Great news is we can change them. There is a wonderful time frame to break and create new habits but nothing can change without the majic ingredient of your deep deep desire for change. For it sounds so simple the majic wand just do it thing. It is not but you need to bring your mantel of desire, your reason for wanting new ways and light in your life, and deep courage to preserve when you really don’t want to .
40 Days consecutive days is what is needed to break a pattern, 90 Days will start the cement drying on a new one.Because once you break the old one you need to be building what you want in it’s place. The building always takes longer than the breaking. So 120 days to create a new habit. I know the new thought processes around are 21 days. 21 Consecutive days will give you a start but it will not give you a completion. Building new habits is really an amazing process. You also would do well to have supporters and those you are accountable to in this process.
