Spring Equinox is one of the 4 pillars that supports this time frame we call “a year.” The house of the year has these 4 pillars. The Spring or Vernal Equinox is the death, rebirth time. There are more holy days around this time and Winter Equinox than the other two pillars—all telling variations of the death-rebirth story. Passover, Easter, Bhasiakhi, to name a few. It is always a blood death, which is very linked to birth. There is rarely, if ever, a bloodless human birth. The mother has to die to the fact that she is in control, that she is just a woman or even a wife or lover, and be reborn into the idea of being a mother as a superimposed role on top of all the aforementioned roles.
This is the time of year that beckons you to see what old patterns you have been dragging around that are killing you or have killed a part of you. This is not easy to do by yourself; to do in your “normal” environment; this is why I have often taken a group to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley at this time most years. I encourage you to take time to do things out of your comfort zone. Go to a Jewish friend’s home for Passover if you have never done that. Ask if they are really getting into the depth of the Passover story or just ritual. You want depth. Go to Good Friday and Easter Sunday Services with your Christian friends or by yourself. Come to Bhaisakhi in Los Angeles. It will blow your mind in scope and range of the very commercial to the deeply sacred. Go on a 10-day fast and do yoga every day.
Spring is the best time to fast and clear the debris of the past. Clean out ALL closets and drawers. Make it delightful. Call on friends to help you and tell them they get first choice of the things that need to leave you. Spread it around. Give some to your cleaning help, to your church, to your community. You don’t even need to have a yard sale, just make it a clean give-up, a giveaway. You want to create clear space for the Divine to bring new gifts in. Things you might never have expected can come into a clear space.
Have you noticed that fire always clears things but it also allows life to come from the death it creates? Floods ruin then give the gift of great topsoil. Each creator of death has life. It brings. So, in welcoming the bloom of Spring, (hopefully you are having spring by now), you get to reaccept your life on new terms. If you come to The Equinox Workshop on Friday, March 21st, Keith and I will be leading you into a death and a new contract for life. It will be deep, deep again, and joyous in the rebirth. You will get to assign what is leading your life in this next 4-month cycle.
I encourage you to do this deep meditation to get ready for this day (or dying) and then being resurrected in a new form.
Meditation for Transformation
Eyes: closed and focused on the space between the hands.
Mudra: Thumb touching thumb, forefinger (or Jupiter finger) touching opposite Jupiter or forefinger; other finger rolled down into the palm with the second knuckle of the Saturn or middle finger touching each other.
Mantra: 40 repetitions of Wahe Guru per breath. Yes, you will say Wahe Guru quickly and it will transform you. Don’t get discouraged if this is challenging at first. Start with 3 min; add 1 min. a day till you reach 22 min.
This is priceless transformation. Tell me what happens to you. I truly want to know. I love, love, love this meditation. It is one of my daily meditations.
Wahe Guru. All love and light unto you,
